A Brief History of The Thanet
Camden Town in the 1940s
The Thanet (meaning 'beautiful place') was set up in 1945 by Metropolitan Police as The Thanet Boys' Club.
It was managed, staffed and run by the Met into the 1980s, providing access to sports for local boys, such as football, boxing, cricket, running, camping and outdoor activities.
In 1969 we moved to Malden Hall in Herbert Street and the former church mission hall, dating back to circa 1862, was given in trust in perpetuity to The Thanet Youth and Community Centre. It was run without local authority funding, largely by volunteer support, from the ‘70s up until the recent period. The Thanet was registered as a charity in 2006.

The Thanet Youth & Community Centre is a registered charity based in Camden, London. We have served the local community for over seven decades.

The Thanet’s chief aim is to improve the quality of life for those who live in the local community. We run a diverse mix of programs.
